University hostel life creates a constant stream of shared expenses — mess dues, bills, informal loans — that usually live in notebooks, group chats, and memory. Khaata Wise was built to put that chaos into one mobile system.

The problem

The challenge

Hostel students juggle recurring payments like mess fees and utility-style bills while also tracking informal loans between friends. When records are informal, disputes and forgotten dues become normal.

Existing consumer finance apps are rarely shaped for this specific social context — shared living, rotating responsibilities, and small recurring obligations.

The product needed to feel lightweight enough for daily student use, while still being structured enough to keep payment history trustworthy.

What it does

The surfaces we shipped

Mess & bill payment records

Track recurring hostel payments so dues are visible before they turn into disputes.

Loan tracking

Record money lent and borrowed between students with enough context to stay honest over time.

Shared living money workflows

Support the everyday financial coordination that comes with hostel life — not just personal banking.

Mobile-first experience

A React Native app designed for how students actually manage money: quickly, on the phone, between classes.

Clear payment history

Keep a durable record of obligations and settlements instead of relying on memory and chat screenshots.

Extensible student tooling

A foundation ready for more hostel-finance features as the product grows with its users.

The build

What we built

We built Khaata Wise as a React Native app backed by Node, Express, and MongoDB — focused on hostel payment records, mess and bill tracking, loan visibility, and related money workflows.

Students can keep dues and shared obligations in one place instead of reconstructing history from chats when someone asks “who paid what?”

The result is a practical money companion for hostel life: less friction, clearer records, and fewer awkward follow-ups.
